Due to its geographic position
in South-eastern Europe and on the Balkan Peninsula, various
relief and many different habitats in a relatively small
area of 111,000 sq. km, Bulgaria is a very interesting
place for tourists. Foreign tourists are attracted by
over 400 bird species that can be seen here.
A lot of admirers
Starting back in 1983 with
the first English group, today Bulgaria is annually visited
by 8 – 15 ornithologist groups from different countries
and in recent years by many individual tourists. It is
a tradition that most of the groups are English. They
cover three seasons – spring (April, May, June –bird
migration and breeding period); autumn (August, September
– autumn migration); winter (November, February
– birds wintering in Bourgas wetlands).
During the last few years
the interest from Dutch, Swiss, Belgian and Danish tourists
has grown and visits from across the ocean from American
and Australian bird lovers are not an exception.
Butterfly watching
With the years passing
by, the interest from tourists and travel companies in
the natural wealth of the country is growing bigger. The
botanical tours are “obligatory” for wild
nature lovers too. There are also tours for studying and
observing Bulgarian butterflies. These tours give to the
visitors a taste of preserved and wild European nature.
The efforts of the Bulgarian-Swiss
Biodiversity Protection Programme, the control on the
nature territories and their exposition to Bulgarian and
foreign tourists for 5 years, already give their results.
Bird Watching Locations
in Bulgaria
Mention Bulgaria and most
birders think of the wetlands of the Black Sea coast.
This is because there are some species here, like Paddyfield
Warbler, Pied Wheatear and winter flocks of Red-breasted
Geese, which are very difficult elsewhere in Europe (neighbouring
Romania excepted). Lakes Sabla and Durankulak and the
larger lagoons and bays which dot the coast to the south
are now famed birding destinations. Indeed many birders
have worked these wetlands from the relatively inexpensive
holiday resorts of "Sunny Beach" and "Golden
Sands". See Where to Watch Birds in Eastern Europe.
But most of Bulgaria is
mountainous and indeed the capital Sofia lies near excellent
forested ranges. Sofia Airport is connected to all major
European airports and onward flights reach the Black Sea
at Varna and Burgas. Some charters also fly directly to
these seaside reorts.
Particularly good sites
away from the coast include the Rhodope Mountains which
border Turkey and Greece. This is a fine raptor area with
amongst others Black Vulture, Griffon Vulture and Levant
Sparrowhawk. South of Sofia the Rila range has Alpine
species like Wallcreeper, Alpine Chough and Shore Lark.
Indeed, Bulgaria has one of the richest and most diverse
avifaunas in Europe and is worth a visit at almost any
time of year.
If you're looking for that something you've
always wanted but never found or buying a gift for friends and family,
why not take a look at what we've got to offer?
